Utopia?

Felipe Pires*

The IBGE’s numbers from the 2010 census have recently disclosed population and economic data referring to Brazilian towns. One item among the data that called one’s attention is that in the municipality of Santa Teresinha, State of Paraiba, where Fazenda Tamanduá is located, the change in income was 503% between the years 2000 and 2010. To give an idea of the dimension of this number, the greatest growth in this variable among the main towns around Santa Teresinha was 172%.

The per capita income also stood out. The IBGE (Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics) showed that in Santa Teresinha each of the 4,581 inhabitants has an average income of R$ 542.61, the highest revealed among the main towns, even though the change in the number of inhabitants was almost nil.

Has Fazenda Tamanduá anything to do with these figures?

Yes! Today over 100 people live at Fazenda Tamanduá. The number of jobs grew an average of 190% between the above-mentioned years; and the company’s average salary is over twice the average income in the municipality of Santa Teresinha, as verified by the IBGE in 2010.

These data show how Fazenda Tamanduá has been boosting the region’s economic growth, and consequently avoiding the migration of inhabitants from that municipality to larger centers. With a posture that attaches great value to its workers and the inhabitants, the company has become a benchmark for sustainable and social development.

Although some indices demonstrate development, others reveal how needy this region still is. Fazenda Tamanduá is aware of the immense difficulties and challenges that still affect the neighboring areas, and is therefore always seeking more partners with a view to exchanging knowledge and finding new markets, in the belief that the union of entrepreneurs, both large and small, plus the public sector, will improve development rates even further, making the region fairer and more pleasant to live and work in.

Subject: Ecology of vertebrates in the caatinga region and Ecology of reptiles and amphibians
From May 16 to May 21, 2011

Fazenda Tamanduá, represented by Dr. Pierre Landolt, enables practical field classes to be given for two subjects in the postgraduate course on Ecology, at Masters level, at the Federal Rural University in Pernambuco.

The classes were held between May 16 and 21 of the current year and were given by Professors Dr. Rachel Lyra Neves and Dr. Geraldo Moura.

The activities consisted of demonstration of methods for capturing animals, from bats and birds to snakes, lizards and anurans, always stressing the influence of environmental factors on the ecological behavior of the species.

The theoretical and practical classes took place simultaneously, so that it was possible to observe, in the field, the peculiarities of the region that favor the diversity of the fauna and flora seen there.

Always under supervision of their professors, the students handled capturing nets for birds and bats, and interception and pitfall traps for capturing anurans, in addition to active search for animals, so that all methodological procedures for handling  could be passed on to the students.

At the same time, the students were divided into teams so as to develop different mini-projects, using specific techniques for ecological studies of the groups dealt with in the area. The results obtained in this class will be published by the students and professors to disseminate scientific knowledge of the vertebrate fauna found at Fazenda Tamanduá.

The professors and students of the Post-Graduate Ecology Program at the Federal Rural University in Pernambuco congratulate the management of Fazenda Tamanduá, represented by Pierre Landolt, for the farm’s excellent conservation practices.

They also wish to express their gratitude for the opportunity to carry out practical field work on the farm, and for the infrastructure made available during the classes.
