Paraíba is the largest organics producer in the Northeast, according to a survey by Sebrae

The State has about 40 fairs selling organic products. In total, 149 hectares of cultivated area supply Paraíba

At present, Paraíba has approximately 40 fairs that sell organic vegetables and fruit. The growth in the consumption of products free from agricultural chemicals has caused Paraíba to become the largest producer of organics among the Northeastern States, according to the research of Sebrae Paraíba (a service that supports medium and small businesses).

The civil servant Marinalva Gomes has been consuming organic products for 15 years, and to supply her home with the products she goes to two organic fairs per week in João Pessoa. "The flavor of the fruit and vegetables is completely different because there is no chemical product at all on them.

The price is a little bit higher than those of normal products, but it is very well worth it", she said.

According to the Sebrae consultant Newton de Novais Filho, there are 350 families registered at the Ministry of Agriculture, with a total of 149 hectares of cultivated area, in addition to two large farms, which produce organics to supply the supermarkets of Campina Grande and João Pessoa.

The State is responsible for the production of tomatoes, carrots, onions, sweet peppers, yam, cassava, potatoes, greens such as lettuce, and fruits such as pineapple, papaya, passion fruit and bananas.

The consultant explained that one of the main producers of Paraíba is Fazenda Tamanaduá, in Santa Terezinha, which has 2,500 hectares. “We also have producers in the Zona da Mata (Forest Zone), in Jararaú, Rio Tinto, Pedras de Fogo, Alhandra and Pitimbu; and in the Borborema Range, in Remígio, Lagoa Seca and Alagoa Seca”, he explained.

According to a recent study released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Brazilians consume more agricultural chemicals than in any other country in the world: about 5 liters per head per year. In addition, the chemical fertilizers used in traditional plantations contain salts that are soluble in water, which increases the water content in vegetables, reducing the flavor and durability.

Safety is yet another differential in the consumption of organics, in comparison with traditional products, as the production of the former is inspected and monitored by the health authorities. In the opinion of the manager of Sebrae’s market garden (vegetable growing) project, Pablo Queiroz, as the population becomes more conscious of the benefits of consuming vegetables without agricultural chemicals, the market grows.
