On our visit to Fazenda Tamanduá , we saw a remarkable example of
important, sustainable development. This is what we are seeking in
Brazil. The environmentalism prevailing in the rich countries is the
environmentalism of the disillusioned.
We, in Brazil, need to go through the disillusionment of disillusion.
To them, environmentalism is a nature policy that comes after we have
completely lost hope in history and politics.
We don’t see it that way: to us, the only sustainable development that
counts is the development that frees people, by increasing the
opportunities to learn, to work, and to produce.
And it is to this end that we need to do what we have rarely done in
our country’s history. To throw away the institutional form that is
recommended to us, or imposed on us, by the political, economic and
academic authorities, and to rebel.
Rebellion is a necessary condition but not a sufficient condition.
Rebellion needs an ally. Rebellion’s ally is the imagination.
