Minister Mangabeira Unger visits Fazenda Tamandua - Good Manufacturing Practices

Minister Mangabeira Unger visits Fazenda Tamanduá

The Brazilian Minister in charge of the Presidential Secretariat for Strategic Issues, Mangabeira Unger, visited Fazenda Tamandua on March 5, 2009.
He was amazed at our sustainable project and all the experiments that we have carried out in the semi-arid region of Paraiba.

When asked what had most called his attention in Patos, Minister Mangabeira Unger answered:

On our visit to Fazenda Tamanduá , we saw a remarkable example of important, sustainable development. This is what we are seeking in Brazil. The environmentalism prevailing in the rich countries is the environmentalism of the disillusioned.

We, in Brazil, need to go through the disillusionment of disillusion.
To them, environmentalism is a nature policy that comes after we have completely lost hope in history and politics.

We don’t see it that way: to us, the only sustainable development that counts is the development that frees people, by increasing the opportunities to learn, to work, and to produce.

And it is to this end that we need to do what we have rarely done in our country’s history. To throw away the institutional form that is recommended to us, or imposed on us, by the political, economic and academic authorities, and to rebel.

Rebellion is a necessary condition but not a sufficient condition. Rebellion needs an ally. Rebellion’s ally is the imagination.

Training in Good Manufacturing Practices - GMP

At a time when food parameters and quality, and safety for the consumer’s health, are decisive when choosing a product, Fazenda Tamanduá has increasingly sought to perfect its production processes. With this in mind, on January 29, 2009, it held a course on Good Manufacturing Practices for its workers in the honey and biodynamic cheese production areas, given by Mr. José Fernandes de Pontes – an expert in the subject. Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) cover a set of measures that are adopted by the company with a view to ensuring sanitary quality and the conformity of its products to the technical regulations established by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Supplies (“MAPA”). The legislation regulates these measures both generically – applicable to all types of food industry – and specifically – focusing on industries that process certain categories of food.

The norms basically cover sanitary level aspects that range from specific construction norms, with a view to stopping pests from entering and facilitating the maintenance and hygiene of the facilities; storage, transport, and receipt of raw materials; and in the production area, storage, transport and distribution of food products.

Other practices addressed are those dealing with the employees’ personal hygiene, which consider the importance of showering before and after work; washing one’s hands whenever necessary; not wearing ornaments, beards or moustaches; total hair protection; and keeping one’s nails short and without varnish, as well as other items.

The workers’ awareness and training with regard to GMP are fundamental for safe food products!
