CLIMATE CHANGE |

|
|
Climate change …Once again one can see clearly that something is
happening to the climate and especially to the rainfall cycle.
Starting in the afternoon of April 13 last, a storm broke in the Patos
region where rainfall of up to 380mm was registered in just a few
hours! This volume of water corresponds to half the average rainfall
recorded annually!
Due to the flood of the Espinharas River, many houses were flooded or
destroyed, leaving close to 2,000 people homeless in Patos. Roads were
destroyed, leaving the town partly isolated. Fazenda Tamanduá, 10
kilometers from Patos, was also affected, by rainfall that was a
little less intense, but that even so reached 180mm – a volume of rain
never registered in the last 100 years – and was concentrated mainly
in the East zone of the farm. The earth dam of the Varginha reservoir,
almost 100 years old, containing 300,000 cu. m. of water and
overflowing at that time, could not stand such a huge, violent and
sudden rainfall, and burst. |

Luckily the ”tsunami” caused by the burst dam, taking along water and
soil, went over the Néco reservoir’s dam without destroying it, and
caused a huge wave in the Mocó reservoir before leaving the farm, but
fortunately did not cause any other damage nor injury to human beings
or animals. We will assess the damage in detail at the end of the
rainy season and will rebuild this important dam, which ensures the
water supply for a strip of partially native pasture, used by cattle
and horses.
Climate change is a reality that we have to live with and suffer. Now,
to determine its causes clearly is another story! We do know, however,
that CO2 emissions may accelerate this process, so let’s do our bit! |

ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSE |
|
|
|
|
Fazenda Tamanduá receives a great deal of commercial and
scientific correspondence in English, as well as visitors from
all over the world. Understanding is difficult sometimes, and
this difficulty complicates life. For this reason, we have
decided to educate and train our employees in the English
language.
The following people take part in the class: Manoel, the
manager; Alan, the vet; Flávio, the agronomist and beekeeper;
Rogéria, who is responsible for the sheep and goats; Felipe,
who is responsible for financial matters; Célia and Silvana,
our faithful assistants; and the team of the Fazenda Tamanduá
Institute: Ricardo, Déborah and Renata.
The school chosen was Cultura Inglesa, a network that exists
nationwide and whose branch in Patos is managed by an English
family, who are also friends of ours.
The Farm’ class has Camila Lucena as their very dedicated
teacher, who is also very dear to her pupils. The result can
be easily seen: the average marks in the first test were 8.45,
while the school’s average is 6!
Congratulations and success to all! |
