Comparative Study of Acoustic Communication among the Cavy-like Rodents Kerodon rupestris and Galea spixii.

By RAIMUNDO ALENCAR JUNIOR.

Animal behavior is defined as a set of reactions, an attitude or response in the face of some internal or external stimulus, within a dynamic system relating to the organization of a given environment. This type of study is an integral part of ETHOLOGY, that is, the study of behavior.

Within the line of research that deals with the description of the behavioral repertoire of a species, we develop an experimental side with induced situations in order to capture the sounds emitted by the animals that take part in the experiment; we also attempt to understand their behavioral repertoire in naturalistic situations, ultimately being able – in addition to comparing one to the other – to compare the reactions between different species of the same genus, and to understand the similarities and differences among these animals.

A comparative, global analysis of behavior, genetics, physiology and morphology of these species will help us to understand the evolutive path that originated acoustic communication, as it is today, in the species of the genus under study.

The present project, in addition to seeking to describe the behavioral repertoire of the cavy-like rodents Kerodon rupestris and Galea spixii, which inhabit the Brazilian semi-arid region, also aims to associate the sound emissions used by the species in question in each situation suggested, identifying the reactions of both the emitting and receiving animals and their context.

Acoustic communication is very important with regard to communication at a distance, especially when other communicative functions, such as smell and sight, are not efficient, either because of dense vegetation or dim light.  It may also have a modulating function in the behavior of animals living in colonies, such as the animals in question. Therefore, the study of acoustic communication and the description of this repertoire are extremely important in order to categorize the species’ actions (or behavior).

Fazenda Tamanduá, in the person of Mr. Pierre Landolt, not only opened its doors to the development of this research, but also made available to us part of its structure so that we could carry out the work. We were also able to enjoy the unrestrained help of its workers, who show a great deal of awareness in relation to the importance of preserving species and the environment, and of partnerships in scientific production and the generation of knowledge.

The results of this research will be published in a future edition of this journal.
