Animal Well-being and Behavior

 Animal Well-being and Behavior

The numbers for organic milk production are still low in Brazil. There are few producers, and the demand for ecological products, free of agrochemicals, has been large.

There has been increasingly frequent research in the Animal Production area regarding Animal Behavior and Well-being, especially in organic production, where this knowledge must be respected and practiced in order to obtain satisfactory results in the production without causing stress to the animals.

Well-being is something that is built up over time and presents satisfactory results in production in the long term. Therefore, actions promoting the animals’ well-being should be daily and permanent, becoming a routine in their handling.

At Fazenda Tamanduá, a pioneer in the production of dairy products in Northeast Brazil, the animals are kept in a quiet space with trees, without much interference during the day, except for the feed that is served daily and which they are already conditioned to receive.

Good treatment during milking, access to pasture and to good quality water, a calm environment and good quality feed (without the use of any agrochemicals), enable the animals to enjoy a higher quality of life than those under conventional management, and they visually present tranquil behavior in day-to-day life at the Farm.

In a silent patrol to the corral, it did not take long until we saw the cows caressing each other, licking one another; and according to Alan, the Farm Veterinarian, “this is not a lack of salt, like when animals seek salt in each other’s sweat, for they have free access to salt (...); this reflects good handling and the environment that is favorable to their well-being”.

The practice of animal well-being, and the priority given to it, results in a low incidence of difficult birthing, a higher rate of survival after birth, high productivity in terms of milk per animal, low incidence of worm infection – in short, good general health conditions, because a balanced animal organism is more resistant to pests and diseases. According to Steiner, the creator of Biodynamic Agriculture, the ruminant is the generator of energy between the Cosmos and Earth.

It must be said that the animal element is extremely important in a property that functions as an agricultural organism, as is the case in properties certified as Biodynamic; and treating the animals in a positive manner brings great benefits and productive returns to such properties.
