The governor of the State of Bahia, Jacques Wagner, visited the facilities of Fazenda Tamanduá, located in the municipality of Santa Terezinha, near Patos, in the Alto Sertão region of Paraíba.

He came to see the work related to the Semi-Arid Region that is being developed in here in a sustainable manner. The Bahia State Secretaries Ildes Ferreira (Science and Technology) and Ailton Florêncio (Family Agriculture), the director of the National Semi-Arid Institute (INSA), Roberto Germano Costa, and other researchers also took part in the meeting.

Pierre Landolt explains to Gov.Wagner the Fazenda Tamandua's initiatives

The committee was received by the owner of the farm, Pierre Landolt, who presented projects carried out in the sectors of goat raising, cattle raising and irrigated crops, such as the cultivation of the physic nut – a bush with small, greenish-yellow flowers whose seeds are used for the extraction of oil – and the cultivation of algae for the production of Biodiesel in the Semi-Arid Region.

Satisfied with what he saw, Jacques Wagner stressed that people in government who are interested in improving the quality of life of the people of the Northeast, particularly those in the Semi-Arid Region, can not fail to get to know positive and innovative experiments that exist in the different Brazilian States. - ”I have come here to discuss and to learn a little of these experiments, which utilize the conditions of the Semi-arid Region”.

We know that these conditions are not problems, they are different, and we have to learn how to live with them – the Governor pointed out.

Jacques Wagner’s  idea is to establish partnerships for the creation of the Northeast Technology Institute, which will be installed in Feira de Santana (BA), where a network will be assembled with the participation of all those interested in working in favor of the Region. – We should always seek convergences.

We have EMBRAPA, INSA, the experience of Pierre at Fazenda Tamanduá, and knowledge from several universities. I think that being intelligent means nobody thinking that he or she alone shines out more than someone else. The brightest light is produced by causing all this luminosity of knowledge about the semi-arid region to converge, in order to support production.” – he emphasized.

Fazenda Tamanduá

Fazenda Tamanduá is located in the municipality of Santa Terezinha, 319 kilometers from João Pessoa, Paraíba. The presence of a small ridge, called Serrote Tamanduá, gave the farm its name. The owner is the European Pierre Landolt, who fell in love with the Semi-Arid Region and has lived there for more than 30 years. – What brought me here was the challenge, the desire to get to know new situations, different people and cultures – he declares.

Pierre rated this Friday’s visit as a very positive moment, including the connection that was made between Fazenda Tamanduá’s actions and the work carried out by the National Semi-Arid Institute. – One of  things that always encourage me is to see people who come here without prejudice, to learn about what is being done and to try to add something new. This a wonderful and positive thing. I think that when one is lucky enough to have in one’s State an Institute that is specialized in the Semi-Arid Region, where I have been working for 32 years, it is a great opportunity. My experience is just as valuable and is worth being considered, used and taken advantage of, for everyone’s benefit – he declared.
