1ST ACCIDENT PREVENTION WEEK HELD AT THE FARM

During the week from July 17 to 21, 2006, Fazenda Tamanduá held its First Internal Week for the Prevention of Labor Accidents (known by its Portuguese acronym SIPAT). As the name suggests, it is a week focusing on prevention, both with respect to labor accidents and occupational illnesses. It one of the compulsory activities for the Internal Commission for the Prevention of Rural Labor Accidents (“CIPATR”).

On the first day, the 1st SIPAT presented a talk about “Quality of Life”, given by Mr. Péricles Alves de Lucena (SESI/Patos) and addressing topics such as Stress and Exercise at the Workplace, the latter being applied in the growing quest for improvement in the quality of life. This has come to be seen as very important in Brazil in the last 2 years, and is used as an important tool within the range of measures aiming at preventing injuries connected with activities within the working environment (RSI or D.O.R.T)

On Tuesday (July 18), the second day, we had the collaboration of Dr. Paula Christianne G. G. S. Maia (Medical Control Program for Occupational Health / Health Management), focusing on a very important topic: “Family Planning”.

On the third day (July 19), there were talks on “Safety at Work, a factor for change”, given by Mr. José Arivalter Araújo (SENAR/PB) and “A Healthy Mouth” given by Mr. Hugo Leandro de Sousa (‘Dr. Toothbrush’) and Dr. Paula Christianne.

On the last day but one of the 1st SIPAT (July 20), Sergeant Severlânio Medeiros de Araújo (Patos Fire Brigade) focused on the theme of “Defensive Driving”.

Graça Lucena (SESI/Patos)

On July 21, 2006, the last day of our 1st SIPAT, a breakfast was offered to our employees after a glycemia test.

Next, a talk on diabetes was given by Ms. Histilany Mirles Batista Brito Silva (SESI/Patos).

And we cannot fail to mention the important presence of Graça Lucena (SESI/Patos) supporting our Event.
Thank you!

The 1st SIPAT brought together about 50 employees and their families, who took part in a prize draw, a contest for sentences about labor safety and health, and the election of the Model Labor Safety Worker.

The result of the contest for the best sentence about safety and health at the workplace was announced on Friday. Of the 27 sentences submitted only one was chosen, and the sentence finally selected was: “Don’t regret an accident that happened, but rather celebrate an accident prevented”, written by Marcelo Ferreira dos Santos. Congratulations! Also, the choice of the Model Labor Safety Worker was announced: Afonso Vicente da Silva.

The aim of the First Internal Week for the Prevention of Labor Accidents was, of course, to give orientation to our employees and make them aware of the importance of preventing work-related accidents and diseases. We should remember that the SIPAT should not be regarded as a mere legal obligation, but rather, as the continuation of our work for the prevention of accidents and occupational illnesses, in which victory lies in the promotion of health and the value of life.

Chairwoman of the CIPATR

The 100 days of Peter

A 100 days back Peter Robin Bernet and his family arrived from Switzerland to replace Didier Jean, who retired after 29 years of administrating Fazenda Tamanduá together with Pierre Landolt.
With a BS in tropical agriculture from the Swiss Tropical Institute and a MBA from the GSBA in Switzerland, Peter worked 5 years on farms in the south of Pará before returning to old Europe. Besides creating a deep passion for Brazil during his stay in Pará, he got to know his wife, Dona Marisa.
Today living on Fazenda Tamanduá, he already understands (almost) all challenges that exist when conducting animal husbandry and agriculture in the semiarid tropics. Peter is ready to help find the ideal solutions and improve certain weak points existing on the farm. Passionate dancer of Forró, good communicator who is easily accessed, he listens to the point of view of each party involved, prior to making his decision. For these reasons he was accepted very well by the employees.
Peter had the luck and the opportunity to accompany our yearly IBD inspection performed by Álvaro Garcia, a big lesson in modesty and self criticism!
But let’s give him the word, so that he can pass on his first impressions:
Well, first of all I would like to thank everybody for the warm welcome they gave me and my family. This helped us a lot to adapt as quickly as we did, especially the kids (Nina 4 ½ and Lia 2 ½) who are already going to the farms school and enjoying life with their new friends. They are already inviting all their “uncles” and “aunts” from Switzerland to come and visit them in the “new house”.

Dona Marisa had to realize that her little girls are loosing their refined Catarinensi accent and changing to a beautiful Paraibano accent.I feel very privileged to have a team, in the true sense of the word, working together with me, exchanging ideas, and making suggestions. It’s dedication to the farm and it’s cause is a good basis for productive working.

Dona Marisa and me are happy to have the chance to contribute to the success of this marvelous farm, that really is an oasis in the Sertão.

Peter Robin Bernet

All on line!

Thanks to the increasing quality and speed of our access to the Internet, made via radio from Patos, Fazenda Tamanduá has sought to make this technology available to all.

Two computers are at the disposal of all our employees, day and night, in a small room in the head office building. MSN chats and a lot of research on the Web are a success among the younger people.

The office computers have been replaced by more modern and efficient models, and the 7 people responsible for the Farm have each received a laptop, with their own e-mail address and Skype access!
