THE “ARRAIÁ DO
TAMANDUÁ” IS BACK!
After three years, the “Arraiá do Tamanduá” (a
country folk party), which had disappeared after 10 years of tradition,
was successfully resurrected, thanks to the untiring efforts of
Janailda, George, and Flávio, the dance master, and to the great support
and encouragement of Pierre. |
Janailda and George, who had never organized an event
of this size before, decided to organize this “quadrilha junina”
(June quadrille dance), which was always joyfully celebrated in the
month of August at Fazenda Tamanduá.
The rehearsals started on July 12, on Saturdays and Sundays in the
sports court of the Municipal School at Fazenda Tamanduá.
We were anxiously awaiting the adolescents, who had promised to take
part, but unfortunately only eight people turned up at the sports
court to start the rehearsals. |
We were disappointed, as many had undertaken to go. We
did not stop there. The idea of trying with the children came up.
Janailda and George went to the houses of all the Farm’s children, to
invite them to take part.
All the children were interested, as were their parents, and in the
evening we were surprised, when we arrived with the dance master (who
lives in Patos), to find the court full of children anxious for the
first rehearsal
We were very happy at this, and we soon formed 12 pairs
of children. The rehearsal lasted an hour, and was great fun. Then we
scheduled the next rehearsal, and at this one we had a larger group,
with 14 pairs of children, who stayed on until the last day of the
quadrille. Among them there were the special characters of the
quadrille: the bride and groom, princess and prince, queen and king,
queen and king of the corn, cowgirl and cowboy, Maria Bonita and
Lampião, gipsy girl and gipsy boy, and the country bumpkins.
There were 9 rehearsals – 5 in the school court and 4 in
the Museum yard, as the party would be there.
After untiring efforts, dedication and lots of loving care,
the long-awaited 16th of August arrived. A large audience was
present, formed by people from the Farm, from the neighboring communities
and from Patos. A jury formed by Célia, Sáfira and Marisa awarded 4
trophies: for the liveliest pair – Natália and Vinicius (Maria Bonita and
Lampião); one for the liveliest lady – Elaine; and one for the liveliest
gentleman, who was Márcio. |
The party started with a simple tribute to the
unforgettable Peter Bernet, given by his daughters Lia and Nina. After
the quadrille, all the children that danced, as well as the others,
received presents and chocolates.
Then the good old forró dance started up, with
two bands taking turns: the “Trio Tamanco de Mulher”, also
formed by inhabitants of the Farm – not yet so well known, but just as
good as the “Trio Tamanduá” and its genuine forró pé de
serra sound. The party ended with the pleasant and familiar
atmosphere of the museum...
And with the promise of Janailda and George never again
to let this tradition die. |

Once again, Fazenda Tamanduá is being a pioneer
nationwide in relation to its Biodynamic/Demeter certification. |
Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock Raising and Supply
approved the only Biodynamic cheeses in Brazil. They are the
following: Coalho Cheese – made with whole, biodynamic,
pasteurized milk, it has a soft texture and is whey-free and slightly
salted. It can be eaten fresh, matured, roasted in a pan or on skewers;
Fresh Ricotta – a mild, creamy product with a
delicate, pleasant texture; it has a neutral flavor and can be mixed with
sweet or savory food; Saint Paulin-Type Cheese – this is a cheese
of French origin and is matured for 4 to 5 weeks; it has a yellowish
aspect and a firm rind. Inside, the cheese is buttery, soft and tasty;
Reblochon-Type Cheese – this cheese, matured for 4 weeks, is
also of French origin; the inside of the cheese is light ivory in color,
fine and smooth, with some round, shiny holes and a firm rind.

In addition
to the cheeses, our Biodynamic Honey in 300 g. glass jars and 25 kg
pails was also approved. Our Biodynamic Honey originates from the typical
vegetation of the Sertão, that is, characterized as the Caatinga,
naturally rich and well diversified, providing excellent quality honey,
with a specific color, aroma and flavor for each of the vegetable species
visited by the bees |
We usually work with three prevailing blooms (this is not a
one-flower honey), namely, Velame –blooms between the months
of January and February, lasting on average 22 days. The honey produced is
dark-colored, rich in minerals and has an excellent flavor;
Marmeleiro – blooms after the first rains fall (from February to
March), lasting on average 18 days. The flowers are frequently visited by
the bees Apis mellifera. It is a very good plant for the production
of honey, which has a yellowish color and characteristic aroma; it is very
tasty; Black Mallow – blooms in the months of April, May and June,
lasting on average 20 days. It produces excellent honey, with a light
color and excellent flavor.
All the biodynamic products of Fazenda Tamanduá are
prepared without the use of any chemical substance or preservative. They
are healthy foodstuffs, rich in nutrients, obtained through the use of
biodynamic preparations, seeking in production a balance in the
biodiversity of the environment, that is, harmonious integration of
nature’s elements: soil, plant, water, animal and energy.
