Fazenda Tamanduá’s mangoes receive
the seal of Bio Suisse

After a two-month analysis, and after answering several requests for complementary information, Mocó Agropecuária received the certification of BIO SUISSE (Association of Swiss Organic Farmers Organizations), signed by Mr. Hans Ramseier, the person responsible for imported products.

Considering the well-known caution of our Swiss friends, it was wonderful and encouraging news for the whole community of Tamanduá Farm, proving that our production system fulfills the highest international norms.

The Santa Terezinha Chief Police Officer visits Fazenda Tamanduá

Dr. Moisés Nunes Camboim, Chief Police Officer at Santa Terezinha, paid a visit to the Farm accompanied by his closest assistants. Besides getting to know the farm and renewing a friendly relationship that was started 25 years ago, the objective was to obtain information on the situation at the farm in relation to hunting, which is officially forbidden just as it is in the whole country, but which continues to occur despite internal vigilance.

In fact, hunters do not hesitate to trespass on the property in order to shoot Paraguayan eared doves and other birds, especially water fowl such as marrecas (wild ducks) and crested ducks, as well as setting traps to catch and kill deer. We learnt that close to 5 deer had been killed, causing a big reduction in the numbers of this beautiful wild mammal, whose population was at last increasing. From another point of view, the traps represent a high risk of accident for the horses and the men that move around the farm.

After an investigation, Dr. Moisés summoned two neighbors to appear at the Santa Terezinha Police Station, where they were notified and had to sign an undertaking not to break the environmental laws again, under pain of imprisonment.

President of EMEPA pays Tamanduá Farm a visit

Dr. Miguel Barreiro Neto, president of Empresa Estadual de Pesquisa Agropecuária da Paraíba S.A. (the State Company for Agricultural Research), accompanied by his Technical  Director, Camilo Flamarion de Oliveira Franco, recently visited Tamanduá Farm in order to assess the potential of organic farming in research and extension activities, within the goals of the new State government.

A thorough, very beneficial and promising “tour d’horizon” took place. The results will be taken to the newly-appointed Agriculture Secretary for the State of Paraíba, Dr. Francisco Quintans, who already knows Tamanduá Farm and who is very interested in raising the flag of organic farming in the State.

On that occasion, the researcher Rêmulo Araujo Carvalho presented a very original study on the control of fusariosis in the pineapple plant, using the bark of antibiotic plants such as the acacia nigri. The latter could be replaced by the jurema (mimosa hostilis Benth.), which is known to contain tannin and is very widespread in the sertão. The State of Paraíba is still the largest producer of pineapple in Brazil, but the sector is in a state of stagnation; and this work could permit the growing of the succulent bromeliad within the organic method, which does not occur yet, despite constant demand.
