The May Novenas

Eliete has always had a lot of influence on the faith of the inhabitants of Fazenda Tamanduá. She is in constant contact with the Catholic Church, with the Children’s Pastoral Service and with Father Jaír, the priest at Santa Terezinha.

Thanks to her, and despite the distance, Father Jair comes to say Mass at the School sports court on the farm once every two months, thus showing that the people in the country are not totally absent from the Church’s present concerns.

Eliete has organized the religious celebrations at Fazenda Tamanduá for years, including those at Christmas and Easter; and therefore the month of May, Our Lady’s month, could not be forgotten, with the already traditional novenas being organized.

May is in fact the time for every family to remember the essential role of each mother, venerating the Virgin Mary and evangelizing friends and colleagues.

The procession, carrying a statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, in which most of the inhabitants take part, winds along the farm’s roads at the coolest time of the evening. Each day, the statue is moved from house to house, and by the end of the month it has visited the 28 homes that make up our community. The inhabitants insist on receiving the visit of the Saint - and of their colleagues - at least one evening in their own homes.

Traditionally, on May 31, the last mission ends at the home of Severino and Dona Dirce, gathering the whole community together for the final talk and prayers and the crowning of the image by the farm’s “little angels”.

Last year there was a big storm, but unfortunately, there was none this year.

The tangible faith of the participants, walking and singing with fervor, is a strong demonstration of the deep-rooted Christian spirit among the country people, despite the fact that they are so far from churches and priests.

After the traditional burning of flowers, a large number of participants, both young and old, ran to Zé Bié’s Home - “the Museum” - where the Tamanduá Trio, with a lively country dance, marked the end of the festivities.

In the sertão, just as in most parts of Brazil, the sacred and the pagan cannot be separated too drastically!

Alto Astral (Good Vibes!), a new way of presenting organic
dehydrated mangoes.

Always trying to get as close as possible to the consumer’s wishes, with innovative and attractive products, Fazenda Tamanduá has developed a new presentation of its dehydrated mangoes: a mixture composed of stars (75%) and small moons (25%). After several experiments and tests of different shapes (fish, moons, "smileys", stars, leaves, circles) it was decided to use heavenly bodies that are part of our universe, which would be a reminder of our biodynamic option.

The tool was made on the farm itself by Jesuíno, who borrowed a few hours from the sister company Misú Irrigação Ltda. (which produces irrigation materials at the farm) in order to find the ideal solution.

This mixture, packed in plastic bags, will enable us to reach new markets: it may be served both as an appetizer and as a snack for children and adults. The small size of the stars and moons allows the fruit’s fine scent and taste to come out in the mouth much faster than before.

Can there be anything better than a certified organic dried fruit, which is dehydrated at low temperatures using a unique technique, preserving all its organoleptic characteristics, without the addition of sugar or preservatives – and with a playful shape? It is, in addition, a very nutritious product: remember that nearly 16 kilos of fresh mangoes are required in order to obtain one kilo of dried mango.

An option and a bet that will surely be successful!
