February 2002

The Tamanduá News is a monthly information bulletin, which will be published in the Fazenda Tamanduá  website, addressing topics of interest to the organic community in general,
as well as the Fazenda Tamanduá  community.

Good news!

The long-awaited rains arrived very early, and heavy: the heaviest rainfall in the month of January in the 20th and 21st centuries (322,05 mm) !

The reservoirs are filling and if it carries on like this we believe that by the end of February they will all fill up and overflow. The water tables will certainly recover, normalizing a situation that has been deteriorating for years. But with the climate changes that are occurring on Earth, no-one can be sure that such a favorable situation will continue...

So, like all good "Northeasterners", all we have to do is to appeal to God for the winter to continue!

Irrigated grass for mowing : "paradise" grass
Sorghum : forage variety"

SEBRAE Paraíba organized a business mission to Tamanduá Farm

On January 11, SEBRAE Paraíba organized a business mission to Tamanduá Farm, with the aim of getting to know the experience of Mocó Agropecuária in relation to organic farming and the degree to which it could be repeated, especially by small and medium producers of the semi-arid region.
It was a great success, with over 70 people participating in this field day, including presidents, directors and technical staff of a wide variety of federal, state and municipal institutions – among which were INCRA, EMBRAPA, EMATER, EMEPA, FETAG and the state Department of Agriculture, Industry and Trade – as well as many people that were settled on neighboring land under INCRA projects.

At the end of this visit, a Letter of Intention was signed between SEBRAE, INCRA and Tamanduá Farm, represented by Arlindo Almeida, Márcio Araújo and Pierre Landolt, respectively, with a view to promoting organic farming in the State of Paraíba. The main focus will be on establishing settlements working specifically within organic norms, which, besides ensuring sustainable exploitation of the resources available and offering the consumer a high degree of security, has great economic potential in both the domestic and foreign markets.

These are the terms of the Letter of Intention signed:
