June 2002

The Tamanduá News is a monthly information bulletin, which will be published in the Fazenda Tamanduá  website, addressing topics of interest to the organic community in general,
as well as the Fazenda Tamanduá  community.

Junes 's edition of Tamandua News brings to you:

Cotton

Fazenda Tamandua's cotton

We recently have started harvesting the experimental field of colored cotton, of the BRS 200 Brown variety, selected by EMBRAPA’s National Cotton Research Center at Campina Grande, PB, and grown organically on Tamanduá Farm. The plume that was produced presented a range of colors, from white up to quite a dark brown, and excellent long fiber. It is only during the processing that uniform color is obtained, explained Dr. Napoleão. We noticed that it was precocious. The evaluation of organic production of this cotton, in economic terms, is under way.

Cold
Store

We have just built the last item that was missing in our packing-house: a cold store. With a capacity of 150 cu.m., it is perfectly adequate for our production and will enable us to guarantee the final consumer an organic mango of very high quality.

Fresh opportunities,
Eco-Tourism

We were visited by Mr. Ivanaldo Bezerra, former Tourism Secretary for the State of Rio Grande do Norte, and Mr. Rômulo Macedo, former Water Resources Secretary of the same State. The feasibility of organizing an eco-tourism route in the "sertão" – essentially in the State of Rio Grande do Norte but also including Tamanduá Farm -- for tourists coming especially from Northern Europe, was evaluated.

The biodiversity typical of the "sertão" in existence on Tamanduá Farm, preserved in the best possible way, seeking a balance between farming and pastoral exploitation and nature, was mentioned as an example to be followed. In addition, the discovery of a center for the development and promotion of organic tropical agriculture and cattle breeding in the midst of the caatinga brush has a special appeal to Europeans, for whom the "Bio" concept is an economic and cultural reality, and may arouse great interest.

Pierre Landolt invited
to
be member of BioFach-Brasil Advisory Board

Ms. Herta Krausmann and Mr. Frank Venjakob, Managing Director and Event Manager, respectively, for Nürnberg Global Fairs, the organizer of the famous BioFach, invited Pierre Landolt, the founder of Mocó Agropecuária, to take part in the Advisory Board of the BioFach Brasil Project. They stated that "After careful research, your respected company was indicated as a highlight in the Brazilian organic scenario".

And it was with a great deal of enthusiasm that Pierre Landolt accepted this challenge, which will help to publicize and develop the organic market in Brazil, with the support and unique experience of the BioFach team from Nürnberg.
